Language and Conflict: In the News

Reuter's translated "shoah" as Holocaust for this quote:
"The more Qassam fire intensifies and the rockets reach a longer range, they will bring upon themselves a bigger holocaust because we will use all our might to defend ourselves," Israeli Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai said.
Shoah does mean holocaust, or disaster, but "the holocaust" is Ha-Shoah.

I have to admit, I'm not 100% on whether or not anyone in Israel uses Shoah for "the Holocaust" but it certainly resembles the difference between "civil war" and "the civil war"
